Care Navigator

Primary care services act as the ‘front door’ to the health and care sector. General Practices (GP surgeries), dentists and local pharmacies are all part of primary care.

As the first point of contact when a patient contacts their GP for advice, Care Navigators play a crucial role in helping people to get the right support at the right time. A Care Navigator will take incoming calls, talk to patients when they visit practice, discuss options for patient care, administration, update patient records, deal with prescription requests and more.

Care Navigator is also known as Receptionist, Patient support team, GP Receptionist.

  • Deal with a wide range of patient queries, face to face or over the phone
  • Work alongside the Doctors to prioritise and allocate appointments
  • A wide range of administrative tasks for patients
  • Complete referrals and order prescriptions
  • Support the clinical team
  • Update the inhouse system and log all calls

How to become

There are no set entry requirements. However, many employers will expect good English, Maths and IT skills. 

You may need GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English and maths.

It is important to check your preferred employer's entry requirements for guidance.

There are plenty of opportunities to take your career further. You could stay in administration, by becoming a Team Leader or a Practice Manager. You could also move into other wider health and care roles. If you like working with people, you may enjoy a more hands on role such as Healthcare Assistant or Social Prescriber. You could even look to retrain to become a GP Nurse.
