Facilities Manager

Facilities Managers are responsible for managing services and processes relating to buildings, and the facilities within them.
 
You will have a diverse range of responsibilities which are dependent on the need of the organisation; these could include organising building maintenance or grounds maintenance, catering, health and safety, cleaning, security and more. 

Facilities Manager is also known as Estates Manager, Support Services Manager, Contracts Manager, Facilities Supervisor.

Role Characteristics

  • Direct, coordinate and plan essential services and processes
  • In charge of refurbishment, renovations and office moves
  • Make sure the building is maintained and meets health and safety standards
  • Manage cleaning, waste disposal, catering, parking and security
  • Negotiate with contractors and suppliers
  • Organise and schedule things that could affect other people and departments

How to become

You will normally need 5 GCSEs including English, maths, and sciences, or equivalent. 

You will normally need either A-Levels, BTEC or T-Levels depending on your preference in learning. However, volunteering and work experience is valued by employers. 

You could complete a degree or apprenticeship in facilities management.

You may be able to develop your career further and apply for more senior managerial roles - typically within operational management.
